Fishing Report - July 2008.

Well folks it is that time of year when we get busy because the Dorado bite goes crazy. For those of you that wait for this time of year as if it were Christmas…. Guess what, Christmas is here.

The weather 100 miles south of La Paz that’s now moving West, has pushed warm water and even hotter fish into the area. They are hungry and ready to eat. The “BIG” Dorado have arrived and in the kind of numbers that over the past two weeks have provided limits of these big fish as the norm, almost daily! Many of these fish are in the over 50 pound class!!!!!

These big Dorado are not just for the guys. The ladies are showing of their muscle and landing their share. Ables party of Southern California, Christie & Nicole fishing on “Wild Cat” with Boat Captain / Guide Pico, scored some very nice fish. They should be very proud of their Big Dorado. They displayed some of them at dock side with anticipation of more great fishing adventures to come. (photos above)

We have had many female anglers visit with us in the last month. Henrietta Baldazo from Sacramento, CA sports a sampling from her catch of Dorado in June. We are very happy to see such big smiles and such big fish from our female guests. Way to go ladies!!!!

Lisa Eckhart and her family from Seattle, WA area enjoyed fishing while celebrating her son Brandyn’s Birthday….looks like it was a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! The boys celebrated with several big Dorado of their own. They fished on the Parker - “Big John” with Captain/Guide Rodrigo. During their bash they were rewarded with great Dorado fishing in addition to their two Marlins.(photo right) His father Russ, could not let the young ones show um‘ up so he represents with a great looking Bull of his own weighing in at 55+ pounds!

The limits on Dorado are coming early in the day and allowing our guests to look for Marlin after capturing their limits. That was the experience of the Salamon Family group who recently fish with Baja Pirates. Their search resulted in the landing of a nice Marlin. They took time to pose back at the dock for a family photo opportunity by the Baja Pirates’ sign. (photo right)

The Dorado are concentrated in an area between the opening to La Paz Bay and Espiritu Santo Island. It is an area that is known to the local fishermen as El Canon, and is easily accessible to the Baja Pirates Fishing Fleet. As is normal, the fish are relating to the floating structure of Sea Grass and other debris.

Albert Roland from Bakersfield, California recently joined in the Dorado experience with limits aboard one of the fleets Triumph 210’s with Captain/ Guide Lilin. They caught their Dorado limit every day of fishing. These center console boats provide an excellent fishing platform to fight the big Dorado. You never know which side of the boat you will end up on to land that trophy of a life time.

Benjamin Brown and his father from Massachusetts would say the center console platform was ideal for landing their Dorado’s on their father - son trip. Looks like it is big smiles all around with this hot Dorado action!(photo up and right)

Jim Jessup from San Francisco, Ca. related his party of 3 guests hooked up all at once on their center console with the assistance and skill of the Captain/Guide Jesus. We were glad to hear from you and look forward to seeing you next year!(photo down right)

The warm water push coming North into the fish trap, known as the Sea of Cortez, each year brings a large population of Bill Fish. Thomas Ripley was fortunate enough to catch the first Blue Marlin of the Baja Pirates 2008 fishing season. Mr. Ripley was fishing with Guide Memo and I’m sure has a memory of the event that will not be soon forgotten.

Ted Hofmeister from Elk Grove, Ca. and Eric Swanson from Sacramento, Ca. also fished with Memo and they hooked two Stripped Marlin. The larger of the two they released while the smaller one was kept and shared by the group. We are so glad you had a great trip and happy to hear you’ll be back next year.(photo right)

Captain / Guide Memo on the Defiant “EmilP” seems to be on a roll when it comes to catch and release of the increasing population of Bill Fish off the coast of La Paz. Captain Memo has three Catch and Release Marlin in just the past week alone. Great work Memo! All these clients have now qualified for the Baja Pirates Catch & Release Club. Don’t forget to submit your Catch & Release forms to Walter Phillips at the Baja Pirates Office to obtain your official Catch & Release Certificate. Fishing friends Miguel & Jorge scored on big Dorados recently. The friends fished with Guide Juan Carlos on a Triumph 210 in the “Slot” area outside the La Paz Bay opening.

The action these past weeks has been exciting. The day time temperatures remain high, low 90’s to 100 degrees, and fishing is hard work. Just ask Melina and Pedrito, the wife and son of our Dock Master Pedro Barroso. Just last week Melina’s arms were just to tired after a lengthy battle of wills to display her capture of this beast, larger than herself . Pedrito expertly displays just how exhausting a day helping Dad at the docks can be by taking a short rest period next to a recently caught big Dorado. The size of the giant fish is obvious when compared to the supine Pedrito.(photos below)

The Crew at Baja Pirates would like to thank all of our guests for your kind words and for sending great photos for us to use in the fish reports as well as in the production of our 2008 Sport Show DVD.

The prospects for the coming weeks are bright. Outside temperatures will remain high and the fishing will remain just as hot. So grab your sunscreen and passport, the Big Dodos and Bill Fish are here!

Wishing you tight lines in all your endeavors,
